Soo d Art & Company is an art group that explores the expansion of ‘body-space’ created by accumulated memories in a specific place as a keyword. They continue their creative work by discovering various images and phenomena based on the body that passes through the past and present via place and memory.
Soodong Jung received his doctorate in Dance from Sungkyunkwan University, where he also completed his undergraduate and graduate studies. He is currently active as a choreographer, dancer, and educator. Jung’s creative work is organically connected to his pedagogical practice, and he continues to develop research and choreography grounded in the exploration of physical movement, rhythm, and spatial concepts. His choreographic career began with Fake Disinterest (2014), premiered at the Young Choreographers’ Showcase. The work received the Jury Award at the NO-BALLET International Choreography Competition in Germany and was presented again as a finalist at the MASDANZA International Dance Festival in Spain. This early recognition led to his selection as a guest choreographer for the Austria Graz Tanzkompanie in 2015, laying the foundation for his international activities.
Building on his work abroad, Jung presented Dive in 2016 as part of the Korea National Contemporary Dance Company’s “Invited Korean Choreographers” program. In the same year, he was honored with the “Dancer of the Year Award” from the Korea Contemporary Dance Association. In 2017, he participated in the Critics’ Choice Dance Festival with Rhythm Analysis, receiving both the “Best Choreographer Award” and the “Dance Acting Award,” gaining widespread attention from critics.
Since then, Jung has continued his active creative work through his ongoing series exploring rhythm, the body, and space: Rhythm Analysis (2019, selected by the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture), Reign (2020, Arts Council Korea – Arts Creation Program), Reign: The Other Side (2022, SFAC selection), Side of Rhythm (2023, SFAC selection), and Side of Rhythm: Tilted Gaze (2024, SFAC selection). Most recently, he received the “Best Work Award” for Terminal at the 7th Arts in Tank Festival. Based on this work, he was selected as an invited choreographer for the 2025 Seattle International Dance Festival, where he presented the piece on the international stage.
As an educator, Jung has served as an adjunct professor in the Department of Dance at Sungkyunkwan University, where he was named an Outstanding Lecturer in 2019. He has continued his teaching career at Korea National Sport University, Seoul Institute of the Arts, and Jeonbuk National University, contributing to the field through both instruction and mentorship.
Jung has consistently pursued research on “the body and space,” grounded in both practical performance and academic inquiry. His doctoral (Ph.D.) research, titled “A Perspective on Interculturalism in Contemporary Dance,” defines interculturalism as the recognition and respect of difference among bodies shaped by diverse cultural backgrounds. He approaches dance as a medium through which varied genres, environments, and identities can communicate and find unity. Building upon this foundation, his academic work examines participatory performance and performativity, focusing on the “agentive body” of both performers and audiences. In his artistic practice, he continues to investigate rhythm and space from various social perspectives, connecting scholarly research with creative work. Through academic research, artistic practice, and extensive teaching experience, Jung strives to develop innovative choreographic methodologies and contemporary training models that enable students to engage in both creative and scholarly achievement.
